BUNN MCU Single Cup Coffee Maker – Full Review

The BUNN MCU Single Cup Multi-Use Home Coffee Brewer offers a fresh take on the single-brew coffeemaker concept. Ideal for anyone who likes to serve up a variety of hot drinks, it comes with four interchangeable drawers that allow you to make coffee, tea, and any number of other treats with very little hassle. While there are a few minor things I’d like better if they were just a little different, I am happy with the way this coffeemaker performs and I really enjoy the innovative drawer feature. If you’re looking for something that brews coffee only, you might want to choose a simpler machine. If you, your family, or your guests like lots of options, you’ll probably love the capacity for variety that this model offers. This being said, here are the pros and cons that come with owning a BUNN MCU single cup multi-use coffeemaker.

Solid Performance

When it comes to coffeemakers and other appliances, performance rules the day. BUNN makes coffeemakers for commercial use, and it is quite evident that the company put a lot of thought and effort into making a robust home coffee maker that delivers great-tasting beverages one after another, with what has so far been unfailing reliability. It takes a little less than a minute for your beverage to be ready, and when it comes out, it’s steaming hot.

I haven’t had any problems with the BUNN MCU single cup coffee brewer, but I’ve heard that others have had issues with dirty valves due to the fact that this machine does not use water filters. The problems is easy to resolve and there are videos online that show how to clear the problem.

Loads of Options

I like K-cups. Last time I checked, there were well over 200 varieties of coffee, tea, cider, hot cocoa, and other wonderful things to choose from. I also like loose-leaf tea, instant noodles, and other things that call for very hot water. BUNN must have had me, and others like me in mind when they came up with the concept for this machine, because it lets me make all these things and more. The interchangeable trays are a really cool innovation. They work with K-cups, loose tea, ground coffee, tea bags, and soft compostable coffee and tea pods. You can also dispense piping hot water to make those instant noodles for your lunch or whip up a quick bowl of your favorite oatmeal for breakfast (after you’ve made coffee, of course!)

This machine makes great-tasting beverages. I like the fact that it has a way to make things taste a bit stronger (the pulse brew option) and I like the fact that there are nice, neat drawers for different kinds of drinks. The flavors are just right, without any hint of anything that shouldn’t be there.

Small Space-Saving Footprint

The BUNN MCU single serving coffee maker measures a little more than 16×9 inches, meaning it takes up only a small amount of counter space, particularly in comparison to large drip-style coffee makers. There are a couple of small tradeoff for this little tiny footprint though, and that is that this coffeemaker does not have a large reservoir. The top-mounted water reservoir holds a maximum of fourteen ounces of water, meaning you get enough from the largest serving setting to fill a travel mug. The other tradeoff is that some of the tallest travel mugs don’t fit underneath the spout. Luckily, there are some lower-profile large capacity travel mugs that will fit just fine, so I don’t feel like this is a limiting factor.

Very Easy to Use

Like other single-serve coffeemakers, the BUNN MCU is a delight to use, partly because it is so simple to set up. Pick a drawer, load whatever is necessary to make the beverage of your choice, pour as much fresh water as you need into the top reservoir, and push the brew button. If you are making coffee or tea and want a stronger brew, select the pulse brew option for slower extraction and bolder flavor. That’s it! Once you’ve finished, give your drawer a quick cleanout and you are all ready to go again.  The simple design and the fact that there are not loads of setting options might be seen as a drawback by some, but I think the drawers make up for this by increasing the number of things you can potentially brew up using this one simple machine.

question  “I’ve heard that the BUNN MCU sometimes has defective parts. Have you experienced problems?”

I’ve read some bad reviews concerning defective parts caused by something called “manufacturing tolerances”, and some of them sounded a little scary. Then again, this particular coffeemaker mostly gets great reviews, so I felt confident about purchasing it. I’ve been very happy with the way it works and I have not had any problems.

question  “I like my coffee hot, about 150 degrees. How hot is the water that comes out of this machine?”

You will not be disappointed with the temperature, it’s definitely hot while brewing, close to 200 degrees according to BUNN. What comes out into the cup is still very hot, close to 160 degrees. I add milk to my coffee and it’s still very hot even after cold liquid has been added.

question  “Is the temperature setting adjustable?”

No. Everything comes out at the same temperature.

question  “How many cup sizes are there?”

A lot of single serve coffeemakers have specific cup size settings, but this one is different. You can add any amount of water from 4 to 14 ounces depending on what you’re making. I just use a glass measuring cup to put in the amount I need.

question  “Are there different strength settings?”

Not really, but there’s a feature called pulse brew that pushes the water through a bit more slowly so more flavor is extracted. If you like really rich coffee, try using the ground coffee drawer or a compostable coffee pod. I had to try a few different things to get my coffee to come out “just right.”

question  “Can this be set up for automatic brew?”

No, but you can put coffee into place at night, add water in the morning, and have your first cup of coffee within about a minute.

question  “Can I make ice tea or iced coffee with this machine?”

The BUNN MCU does not have a setting for iced coffee or tea, but you can fill a glass with ice and make the beverage using about half the water you normally would, then add milk, cold water, juice, or other mixers to make cold beverages.

bunn-mcu-2The BUNN MCU coffeemaker is a reliable machine with an innovative twist on the single serve concept. It brews great-tasting beverages and dispenses hot water as well, so you can make a variety of things using just one small machine. It works with K-cups, ground coffee and loose tea, compostable pods, and tea bags, making it great for anyone who enjoys variety.

I just purchased the Bunn MCU. All of the trays were easy to install and remove except the K-cup tray. It required significant effort. I was using tap water that is soft water treated. It ruptured my K-cup and emptied the grains into my cup. I called the Bunn 800 number and was told that this was a frequent problem with treated water and to use spring water or bottle water. He was spot on and the spring water worked fine. He also thought the K-cup tray was defective and is sending me a replacement. Single cup manufacturers should warn the people about using soft water. It creates K-cup rupture issues and thanks to the Bunn technician, I finally found out about it.

Thanks for the reviews. I ended up with this Bunn and am happy with it. The machine is just right for my cabin kitchen (small!) and the drinks are good. I haven’t had an issue with tap water like the previous commenter, but that could be because we are on a well and have no softener.

I was a restaurant manager for years and many of the places where I worked had Bunn coffee makers, which in my experience have always turned out a really good cup of coffee even though they often worked around the clock. I have not been disappointed with this coffee maker, it’s made just as well as the commercial ones. I like the design with the open sides, as it fits a variety of different coffee cups. It is also very easy to use. I do think that an automatic setting would be nice, but I knew before I purchased it that all it has for “features” really is an on / off switch. Also, it would be nice if you didn’t have to refill the reservoir every time you made a cup of coffee, but I think that would take away from the machine’s open shape, which is one of the things I like best! All in all I am happy with the Bunn.
