Breville BKC700XL Single Serve Coffee Maker – Full Review
There’s a lot to like about the Breville BKC700XL, as well as just a couple of minor issues that could be improved upon. Probably most important, I enjoy the convenience this coffeemaker offers over old-fashioned drip machines. It can be programmed to have hot water ready for brewing morning or night, and every cup it delivers is fresh-tasting and perfectly enjoyable. The fact that this model has a programmable thermostat means you get hot beverages at just the right temperature without any burnt or bitter aftertaste, and the iced beverage option is a great bonus. These are just the highlights: Here are some additional pros and cons that come with owning the Breville BKC700XL coffeemaker.
Attractive, Space-Saving Design
This Breville single-serve coffeemaker is sleek-looking, with an almost all stainless-steel exterior and attractive LED lights including a tank light that lets you see how much water is left in the reservoir. It takes up about the same amount of countertop real estate as other single-serve coffeemakers and with a footprint of just 10 inches by 13 inches, a bit less than a standard drip-style coffee maker. It is a little over 13 inches tall so it fits under standard cabinets easily. If your cabinets are extra-short, you may find you have to slide the coffeemaker forward just a little so you can open the top to insert K-cups.
Not only is this a nice space-saver, it also comes with some cool extras including a slim, upright carousel that holds up to 30 of your favorite K-cups. It can easily be stowed in a nearby cupboard or setup on the counter for instant access. The BKC700XL also has a hidden storage compartment that holds a refillable K-cup and a measuring spoon so you can make your own coffee, loose tea, or other beverages if you want to. This is great as it allows you to enjoy things that aren’t available in K-cups, and it lets you enjoy K-cup convenience while saving a little money.
The “My K-Cup” that comes with this coffeemaker is really convenient, but it’s not the best refillable K-cup on the market. If you plan to use your own ground coffee, loose tea, etc. on a regular basis, consider making a minor investment in some additional refillable K-cups like the Brew & Save.
The other “extra” that comes with this coffeemaker is a cleaning/descaling kit that makes it easy to maintain your coffeemaker so your beverages always taste right and the machine continues to perform well. Most competing machines need to be cleaned and descaled, but you have to go out and get the cleaning kit on your own.
Great Programming Options
There are a lot of ways to personalize this machine. First off, you can decide how hot you want your coffee to be. You can also choose between five different brew size settings to accommodate different cups. The drawback here is that some K-cups don’t hold quite enough coffee to impart rich flavor to the largest of the settings. I find that there are a couple of ways to get around this – either do a small cup and a medium one using two separate K-cups, or use the accompanying refillable K-cup with a little extra ground coffee inside.
The built in timer allows you to set parameters for auto-on as well as auto-off, along with a separate optional automatic shutoff that occurs two hours after the coffee maker first comes on.
A removable drip tray allows for easy cleaning and makes it simple to slide taller travel mugs under the spout. One drawback, and one that seems to be common among these single-serving coffeemakers, is that some splatter occurs when you use a wide, short cup. I tend to use taller mugs, so this is not really an issue of concern particularly as cleanup is a snap.
The water reservoir is also removable, meaning you do not have to pour water into a tank right after waking up in the morning. It slides up and out so you can refill it easily, and a charcoal filter allows you to use tap water if you like. I am with some other reviewers who have complained that the Breville BKC700XL tends to malfunction when scale starts to build up, making more noise than usual and sputtering a bit. I find that keeping it clean with the descaling kit and replacing the water filter regularly prevents this particular problem.
Iced Beverages if You Like
While you can theoretically make iced beverages with just about any coffeemaker, the Breville BKC700XL has a special setting for making iced beverages, which is really nice during hot weather. Who doesn’t love a refreshing glass of iced tea? The iced beverage setting is just as fuss-free as the rest of the programming options on this machine. Just put ice into a glass, choose your flavor, and brew. Add juice, water, milk, or whatever other creative mixer you think of, and you’ve got a delightful summer drink in a flash.
Just in case you’re wondering, you can switch between iced beverages and hot ones without allowing the water to cool, and you can switch from one type of drink to another without having to clean or change anything other than the K-cup flavor. I like to have people over and love having the ability to give everyone an enjoyable drink without making much of an effort at all.
“I’ve read some really bad reviews about the BKC700XL. What’s your opinion?”
I’ve seen some scathing reviews and worried about some of them before getting this machine. The unfortunate fact is that some products are defective and wind up making it into customers’ hands. Most of the time, though, products work as promised and that has been the case with this machine, which also happens to be covered by a one-year warranty. Breville is a well-known manufacturer with a good reputation for building quality products and I really don’t think they would ruin that position by allowing a substandard machine to remain on the market for as long as this one has.
“Can I use any brand of K-cups?”
Yes, you can use Keurig K-cups and other compatible cups. There were about 250 different types available last time I looked, and I’m sure that various companies will keep on releasing new options since single-serving coffeemakers are gaining more popularity.
“Is the water temperature setting adjustable?”
Yes, and the hottest setting is very, very hot. I’m not sure what the temperature is but I’ve used plain water (no K-cup) to make instant mashed potatoes instead of boiling water on the stove, and they turned out great.
“How loud is this coffeemaker? I have a young baby who is very sensitive to noise and I don’t want to wake her up making coffee.”
Good question. Some single-serve coffeemakers are pretty loud, but this one is just about silent. You can watch it in action in online reviews and even with the sound turned way up, you’ll have a hard time hearing anything other than the trickle of coffee into the reviewer’s cup.
If you want good coffee fast, you will probably enjoy owning a Breville BKC700XL. Not only is it a good-looking machine with lots of convenient features, it makes wonderful coffee at the temperature you prefer. The iced beverage feature is a really nice extra, and the bonus items that come with the coffeemaker give you the ability to customize.
